Because there is so much change on the horizon for the energy industry and so much uncertainty in the air around the impact of Brexit, we always knew that ESTA’s Independent Energy Consultants Group (IECg) “Energy – Changing Times” event was set to be an interesting day that would trigger some debate. We weren’t disappointed!
There was a lot of interest in this free to attend briefing and the room was full. This was especially good to see given it was the first ESTA IECg event of its time to be held in Leeds. Engie hosted the event at thestudio in the heart of Leeds and it was a fabulous setting for the day.
BREXIT is clearly a big driving force of the uncertainly that is underpinning the energy industry right now. India Redrup (Policy Executive at Energy UK) referred to the “black hole of uncertainty beyond Brexit” when talking to the audience about the future of EU ETS and emissions legislation. And whilst there was common agreement between Jeremy Nicholson (Director at the Energy Intensive Users Group), and Andrew Warren (Chairman of British Efficiency Federation), that the lights wouldn’t go out in Northern Ireland, despite some of the latest news reports, beyond that there wasn’t a consensus of opinion. We'll be exploring this n more detail shortly.
During the afternoon we heard from Mike Denbigh (Senior Advisor – Environmental Business at the Environment Agency) about the latest news and updates about Phase 2 of the Energy Savings Opportunities Scheme (ESOS). One takeaway from the session was that whereas there were extensions allowed in Phase 1, this will not be the case in Phase 2.
The new, up and coming Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR) also struck up a lively debate in the afternoon after Gary Shanahan (Head of Business and Industry Energy Efficiency, Tax and Reporting, from Business Energy and Industrial Strategy) shared the latest on legislation which is still in consultation stage.
Over the coming weeks we’ll be focusing on different areas that were discussed at the event: Brexit, ESOS Phase 2 and SECR…so watch this space! And, we look forward to being involved in a similar event next year.
